Bio Poem

I wrote this poem in preparation for Writing Workshop class with my students tomorrow. The template I will offer my students is slightly different from this one (a big thank you to Kathleen Neagle Sokolowski from her poetry Google Slides Deck to build community in the classroom.

Elisa.

Resourceful, goofy, nerdy.

Partner of Gino; mother of Joaquín, Maya and Noemí; grandmother of Pía and Nina.

Lover of justice, books, my family and rom com movies.

Who wonders if the world will ever be OK.

Who fears putting herself out there.

Who feels happy when she’s relaxing at the beach.

Who would like to live closer to her daughters.

Who has dedicated her life to working with kids.

Who dreams of publishing a book one day.

I haven’t written a bio poem in a long time. Yours is so honest and creates a sense of vulnerability that I can relate to as a writer. It makes me want to reexamine this form. I think I’ll try it in my notebook tonight. Thanks for the inspiration!

I like that it’s short too. I asked my students to write their own bio poems to share in class tomorrow. I’m really looking forward to reading what they come up with.

Elisa, this is beautiful. So much about you has been shared in just a few well-chosen lines. It is beautiful. I’m going to go off now to search for Kathleen’s Slide Deck. Thanks!

This is an engaging format in every way. Can be used for units like : Who We Are. Even at the start of the school year as an introduction. Thanks for sharing so much about yourself.

Thank you, Juliette. It’s scary to put myself out there, but if I advocate for others do so, then I must too.
