This is the first summer in about three years that my husband and my children, including their spouses and our grandchildren, are not going on a vacation together.

During the last few summers, we’ve gone to Europe and loved every minute of it!

This summer, one of my children needed time at home to take a breather and tend to her children. My youngest daughter just had a beautiful baby girl three months ago and are staying close to home for the summer.

My son decided to stay in the Bay Area before classes start back up in the fall.

My husband and I are having our own staycation for most of the summer.

We did go to South America for about ten days to visit family and take care of some pending personal issues.

I returned from that trip straight into a minor surgery that I’m now recovering from quite nicely, thank you very much.

Yet, it feels a bit strange to be by ourselves, even for such a short time, without any kind of schedule for either one of us.

Of course, it’s not as bad as it sounds: my oldest child will be coming to visit with her husband and daughters at the end of July for about two weeks. And, then I’ll be going back with them to celebrate my oldest granddaughter’s first day of grade 2, which has become an “Abueli” tradition. After that, it’s off to Chicago to visit with my newest granddaughter before I return home to face the lovely chaos of a new school year. A new school year that I’m looking forward to.
