I retired from teaching in June. It was one of the hardest, life altering decisions I’ve ever had to make.
Everyone congratulated me and still at the back of my mind a question nagged at me: what was so great about retirement? For one, what was I supposed to do with all the free time?
Fist of all, it’s clear the universe wants me to take care of my health. I’m doing that even though it hasn’t been easy.
And now that I’m on the path to healing. I am establishing routines that work for me. I’m writing and reading more than I have in a long time. I’m tutoring two kids online. And more. I won’t bore you with all the other projects I’m involved in though they are all about learning and serving. Giving back.
I’m in charge of my day. And it does feel good.
But (and you knew there was a “but” coming, didn’t you?), I’m still buying professional teacher books and signing up for online workshops as if I am not retired. My heart hasn’t caught up with my brain. I suppose this will straighten itself out over time, but apparently it’s still too early for that to happen.
So, instead of worrying about this, I am going to listen to my gut and keep learning. After all, that was one of the reasons I became a teacher.
